Digital marketing is massive, it’s such a huge discipline that no one person can be an expert in all the specialisms in digital marketing. It’s important that you first demonstrate that you understand what digital marketing consists of, you want to talk about the different tactics that are used on a day to day basis. Think websites, CRO, UX, email marketing, content marketing, videos, infographics, blogs, SEO, PPC, display ads, social media posts, webinars blah blah blah. It’s all good. The key thing is you know that it’s about creativity and repeatability, KPIs and ROIs. 

Also, whilst you need to be able to demonstrate that you’ve got knowledge of the tactics and strategies at hand, be careful not to rely on buzzwords or jargon. If it’s more appropriate, talk about Google Adwords rather than PPC and talk about Search Engine marketing rather than SEO.

Once you’ve got across what you know about digital, next you need to make it clear what you do, what your skills are. Like, I can’t design for toffee – not even with Canva! I can bash out written copy hour after hour, but I know it’s not the best. I can lay down a mean strategy, think bigger than many people, and can bring various people together to make my plan happen. On top of that, I’ve been obsessed with SEO for the best part of my career and I naturally gravitate towards an organic/inbound marketing approach. That’s what I do.

I remember being astounded at the number of candidates who hadn’t put much effort into their own digital brand. Whenever an interview with a candidate was booked, I would immediately look them up online, usually starting with LinkedIn and then moving on to Google.

It was a little alarming to see LinkedIn profiles without a profile picture, or public tweets that contained profanity, or blogs that hadn’t been updated in years. I couldn’t really understand why the profiles were so neglected when these candidates were applying for digital marketing roles.
